BREAKOUT SESSION 2:4 PANEL DISCUSSION

TOPIC: ADDRESSING WOMEN’S MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS FOR COMMON MENTAL DISORDERS IN THE PRIMARY CARE SETTING IN WEST AFRICA

Chair:

Co-chair:

Venue:

In Sub-Saharan Africa, women are exposed to many risk factors and bear a disproportionate burden of common mental disorders, especially depression. Lifting this burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Sub-Saharan Africa, with few mental health resources, requires task sharing, which entails using non-specialists and laypersons to deliver mental health services in the primary care setting. Several trials of task-sharing interventions in LMICs have shown improvements.  Obstacles to further progress include a lack of evidence regarding what conditions should be treated, with what interventions, by whom, and how to overcome stigma and access obstacles.

This panel brings together practitioners and researchers to discuss effective and scalable strategies for addressing women’s mental health needs concerning depression and other common mental health disorders that women face in West Africa

EXPLORING THE CONCEPT OF A REGIONAL COALITION FOR WOMEN’S CANCER

Chair:

Co-chair:

Rapporteur:

Venue:

This panel aims to highlight existing research in the W. Africa subregion focused on women’s cancer (breast and cervical) and explore the concept of a regional strategic plan that leverages partnerships facilitating resource sharing to meet clinical needs, advance training and capacity, share best practices at the policy and implementation levels, conduct collaborative research, develop cutting-edge innovations, and advocate for women’s cancer prevention and control throughout the West Africa Region.

Is it feasible to decrease the burden of women’s cancer in West Africa through collaborative research, education, clinical care, and advocacy by developing a West Africa Women's Cancer Coalition? How could a regional coalition support the goals of implementers, researchers, policy makers, advocates, and funders and facilitate opportunities to respond to critical capacity gaps through local partnerships?
