Poster Production
General design principles for creating an effective and engaging poster.
| โ A poster should be self-contained and self-explanatory. It should quickly orient the audience to its subject and purpose with a clear message and logical layout. |
| โ Aim to use your poster as a means for generating active discussion about the topic. |
| โ Keep presentations simple and clear โ a mixture of text and graphics is recommended. |
| โ Remember that the viewer determines the time spent at each poster โ unlike a slide presentation, so make it scannable. |
Poster Layout
How to arrange and structure your content for maximum readability.
๐ Column StructureArrange materials in columns rather than rows. It is easier for viewers to scan a poster by moving along it rather than zigzagging back and forth. |
๐ Reading FlowOrganise your poster with the starting point at the top left corner and ending at the bottom right corner. Introduction goes upper left, conclusion lower right. |
โ๏ธ Concise SectionsDesign individual sections so they can be read quickly. Avoid large blocks of text and long sentences. |
๐ฏ Visual StorytellingLimit text and use visuals to "tell the story". Numbers or arrows can guide readers through sections. The abstract does not need to be on the poster. |
Sections of the Poster
Standard components that every academic poster should include.

Illustrations, Text & Fonts
Visual and typographic guidance for a polished, readable poster.
๐ผ๏ธ Illustrationsโข Tables, graphs, and photographs are excellent ways to display results. โข Ensure they are clearly labelled and can "stand alone" (e.g. Figure 1: Patient distribution by disease). โข Photos should be high resolution, with permission/consent information in a legend at the bottom. โข Present numerical data as graphs rather than tables โ graphs make trends more evident. โข Number figures and tables consecutively in the order they are mentioned in the text. โข Avoid abbreviations and acronyms where possible. |
|||
โ๏ธ Text Guidelinesโข Minimise narrative โ use short, separated paragraphs. โข Use numbered or bulleted lists to convey series of points effectively. โข Do not set entire paragraphs in UPPERCASE or boldface type. โข Ensure good contrast between font colour and background. |
|||
๐ Recommended Font SizesEnsure your text can be read at 1.5 metres distance. Use these minimum sizes:

Best Practices for Presenters
A few additional recommendations to make your poster session impactful and memorable.
| โ Bring printed A4 hand-outs of your poster for interested attendees. | โ Have business cards available for networking and follow-up. |
| โ Review your poster for clarity, readability, and visual impact before printing. | โ Prepare a concise 4-minute summary of your work for the oral component. |
| โ Arrive early on set-up day to identify your assigned panel. | โ Engage actively with attendees during breaks to maximise visibility. |
๐ Remember: Simple stories often make the most effective posters โ don't worry if you don't have vast amounts of data. Poster presentations are brilliant ways to talk about your work, and there's often a poster prize to be won!
